Disney buys Lucasfilm

The news of the century. Disney buys Lucasfilm.

I, for one, am not surprised. Looking back you know disney has been courting Star Wars for quite some time. Star Tours, StarWars weekends, disney characters dressed like Han and Leia.

Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers."

I back Lucas on this, he has always given his fans the freedom to parody, insult, create, and add to his universe. And he's always treated StarWars like a business. Because this is the movie business.

Look at it like this... It's like we voted him out of office. Fans overall hated the prequels. Hes not doing anything with the franchise now. And there are plenty of people let alone fans who are more than willing to take his place. If Disney can do to StarWars what they did with Tron I think Episodes 7, 8, and 9 might be something to look forward to.

The only question left. Who is going to play Luke Han and Leia...?

Nerd thing to do today.

Learn Aurebesh

The language of StarWars!
I first found this alphabet in the StarWars Insider years ago which I learned as Aurek Besh. The Wookiepedia calls it Aruebesh, and despite the difference in names the letters are still the same. So spell your name! Communicate secretly amongst friends! Or write your college thesis in a fictional language!

MOVIE

Battle Los Angeles Aaron Eckhart (Thank You For Smoking, Batman) stars as a staff sergeant leading his team to clear out a section of Santa Monica before the USAF bombs the coast to level the alien attack. I like this movie alot. For many reasons. Its not terribly cheesy, It starts up pretty straight forward then reality starts to bend and the fiction creeps in as the movie goes on. The destruction FX are really good and the gunfights are pretty solid. The technology is practical i.e. the space ships flying. Very much like the MKV they fly using multiple rockets firing simultaneously to move them around. The aliens are somewhat original but aren't as distinguishable as say the 'Aliens' alien. Over all a good sci fi movie to check out. Nerd thing to know: The effects company Hydraulx was working on Battle LA, put the project on hold to do a smaller budget movie called Skyline (terrible movie) It being a rival "alien in LA" movie, the Strause Bros. (owners of Hydraulx) caused quite a stir.

PLUGZ's PROJECTS
I was recently a contestant on Hot Set on the SyFy channel. We had to build a set in three days. But with all the interviews and the reality show proceess I dont think we had more than 20 hours of work on it. We were able to finish our set for the Alien Queen. And (spoiler alert) we won.

"Hey! We're all in strung out shape, but stay frosty, and alert."

From Aliens 1986
So far the internet leads me to believe this is the first instance we hear the term "stay frosty." I originally heard it on an episode of Reboot, then later Zorak says it in a Space Ghost Coast to Coast episode.

Nerd thing to do today.

Two words. Adventure Time.

A friend of mine from KS turned me on to the show a month or so ago and I've been hooked ever since. Its out there either on youtube, cartoon network, or frig man, google it and see what wacky things come up. Watch it. Naooow.

MOVIE
Appleseed Ex Machina. Knowing that there are two CG Appleseed movies I often forgot what made them different, except for the fact that Briareos is in human form running around. I just recently picked it up in a video store when I visited home last week. Much better than I remember it.
Deunan and Briareos are dealing with terrorist attacks on the citizens of Olympus, humans and cyborgs alike. A bioroid named Tereus (a genetic copy of Briareos) joins the team and threatens their partnership. Plenty of mechs and John Woo style action. They also stepped up the graphics on this movie from the first one.... I need to go back and watch the original-original.
Oh, lady with the side burns. You so crazy.

AURORA'S BIBLIO-FILES
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
I bought this book a while ago because it intrigued me, and just recently picked it up and read it. It was so good that immediately after I finished it, I found the sequel at the library and blew through that one too. Now I'm anxiously waiting for the final installation. The story follows Kvothe, a man of legend. Or in his own words: "I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at an age younger than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that made minstrels weep."
This book is told in first person, as Kvothe remembering his youth. He is not an old man, but something in him is quietly waiting to die, and his student Bast is determined that this will not happen, that somehow he can make the old Kvothe come forth again.  It is the story of how legends are born, of one man's search for meaning in his universe and of his fight against the powerful, sinister forces that not only took his family from him at a young age but also threaten the world he knows. It is beautifully written, and like all legends, Kvothe does have his blind flaws. This is a great read of epic proportions.

PLUGZ's PROJECTS
I havn't done squat in a month because some moron hit me on the freeway and totaled my car. But I will be involved in a reality TV show for SyFy coming up on the 18 of September called Hot Set. Two Production designers pinned against each other to build a movie set in three days. Go team Aronowitz!

Oh, also I've been messing around with Kingdom Hearts and building Gumi ships that resemble starwars ships.

Bellicose Juggernauts Pilot (finished)

Nerd thing to do today.
Watch my movie and share it with a friend. I've just spent two long months on a short taken from a feature I wrote called Bellicose Juggernauts. We made it with no budget. My actors worked for credit, and I was the crew. Accomplishing much with nothing.

Sorry we haven't updated in a while. When things settle back down here around summer we may get back into it.
